Wind Power

The Sierra Club recently rated the University of California campus system as one of the top ten most sustainable schools in the country--but there is still a long way to go. To move forward it's time our campus invested in it's own renewable energy resources and stood up as a real leader on climate action. In order to accomplish this our campaign mission is two-fold: to first show the UC of the feasibility of producing our own power from the winds present at two different UCSC sites, and then to act on this with the installation of a pilot wind turbine. Our project is in the initial stages, however, meteorological data obtained about the past few years at both the Long Marine Lab and on top of Mt. Hamilton seem very promising. Our next steps include performing a detailed analysis of the data, creating a report on our findings, and beginning outreach throughout the administration, faculty, staff, students, and community. In addition, our campaign will require more research on wind energy, laws on all levels of government, tax-incentives, and product options.
